The Omaha Area Youth Orchestras Concerto Competition is an opportunity to perform before a panel of judges, receive written comments and compete for one opportunity to perform as a soloist with Youth Symphony during the 2018-2019 season.

The OAYO Concerto Competition is limited to musicians who are members of the Omaha Area Youth Orchestras in BOTH the season in which they audition and the season in which they perform.  

Members may audition on any instrument and are not limited to the instrument which they play in OAYO orchestras or ensembles. Winners may audition again after three years. There is no minimum age requirement.

The Competition is designed for all instrument divisions, ie. woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings, harp, guitar and piano.  A single Competition winner will be announced.  

The Concerto Competition Finals are open to the public at UNO Recital Hall (Children under age 10 not admitted.) The public will be allowed to listen to the competition only from the last rows in the back of the recital hall and no other location in the Strauss Performing Arts building.

Repertoire  –  One movement of a standard concerto or concert piece performed from memory.

  • Entrants should consider playability of the Concerto by a youth orchestra.

  • Pieces exceeding 10 minutes will be disqualified unless approval has been given by the Music Director prior to the Competition.

  • Entrants will be given up to 10 minutes to perform at the discretion of the judges.

  • All submitted selections will be reviewed by the Concerto Committee who reserves the right to reject any titles and/or limit the number of contestants.

  • OAYO will pay up to $200.00 in rental costs for orchestral parts and score for the performance with the Youth Symphony.  Entrant will pay the remaining amounts.

Winning Performance

The winner of the Concerto Competition will perform with the Youth Symphony during the 2018- 2019 season. The winner must be available to rehearse at the Music Director’s discretion during the 2018-2019 season.  The concert that the winner performs on is at the discretion of the music director and may not always be at the same concert or venue each season.  Questions may be directed to the Music Director.

 Entry Deadline: March 5, 2018

  • Incomplete Entries will not be considered.

  • Late entries will not be accepted.

Entry process:

  1. Complete the on-line Entry Form

  2. Submit the Entry Fee of $35.00 by either paying on-line or sending a check to the OAYO office.

  3. Mail to the OAYO Office at 1905 Harney St, Omaha, Nebraska 68102:

  • A completed Teacher Recommendation Form and

  • A typed personal resume stating your musical education, teachers, performances and prizes.

Entry Fee – $35.00

Submit the Entry Fee of $35.00 by either paying on-line at the Charms website or sending a check payable to OAYO to the office.

On the day of the Competition, Entrants must:

  1. Perform the Concerto from memory

  2. Provide their own accompanist (including pianists)

  3. Provide two copies of the music with measure numbers for the judges to view during theCompetition (at least one of these must be the piano part or a full score)

  4. Be prepared to supply a full score to the Music Director upon request.

  5. Only in the event of a scheduled school instrumental music trip outside of Nebraska will an entrant be allowed to videotape their audition prior to the competition date for the judge’s consideration on the date of the competition.  

Judges’ Decision

The judges’ decision will be final. The judges reserve the right to withhold award, if, in their opinion, participants do not qualify. The winner shall receive neither fees, nor broadcasting rights for their performance with the Omaha Area Youth Symphony.

Dear Musicians and Parents,

Omaha Area Youth Orchestras would like to announce that registration is now open for the 2018-2019 Season!  It will be the 60th Anniversary season.

Auditions will take place the first two weeks in April.  Next season’s orchestra and chamber music programs will run from the end of August to May and musicians in these programs will present three concerts and have the opportunity for retreats and sectional coaching from professional musicians and educators!

How Your Students  Can Sign up for an Audition:

1. Musicians (or their parents) need to complete the online audition application available here:http://www.theauditionscheduler.com/oayo.php.

2. Musicians will need to complete all fields, select which orchestra(s) to audition for and select every day and time which they/you are available to audition.                                                   

3. Musicians will need to pay the $30 non-refundable audition fee online or send a check or cash to the OAYO office 1905 Harney Street, Suite 630, Omaha, NE 68102). If the musician registers late, the fee goes up to $40.

Timeline and Deadlines for Auditions:

Monday, March 19th:  Deadline to sign up for an audition – late applications will be accepted; however, the fee will increase to $40. Please contact the OAYO office (402-238-2044).

Monday, March 26th:  Emails will be sent out to musicians/families notifying them of their assigned audition time. If they register late, notification may be later.

Auditions:  April 7th – April 12thApril 14th, & April 15th. 
 Please see online registration to choose date, time and location.

Friday, May 18, 2018:  Scholarship Applications due date for tuition and private lessons received by the OAYO office or on-line through the OAYO website.  You must re-apply every year for a scholarship.  Contact the OAYO office regarding late applications.

June 1:  Notification of acceptance, orchestra ensemble placement, and scholarships.

What Musicians Need to Prepare For Their Audition:

See the audition brochure on the Auditions page for specifics on what to prepare as the requirements vary by orchestra.

1. All musicians will need to prepare a 2 to 3 minute solo that is polished and shows their technical and musical capabilities.  It does not need to be memorized.

2. All musicians will also need to prepare scales (the number and type varies by orchestra – please see the audition requirements link).

3. Musicians will be asked to sight read at auditions as well.

4. Musicians auditioning for Youth Philharmonic (YP) and/ or Youth Symphony (YS) will also need to prepare audition excerpts. There are two different excerpts for YP and YS. If the musician plans to audition for both YP and YS, they MUST prepare  BOTH  YP and YS excerpts (no exceptions).   Excerpts are found on the Auditions page

OAYO Offers Scholarships to Families in Need:

Scholarships are awarded as a percentage of the tuition (25%, 50% or 75%) and based on financial need.  The Federal Poverty guidelines are used to calculate the percentage of scholarship. For example:

·        Family of 5 with an income of $45,000 qualifies for a 75% tuition scholarship

·        Family of 3 with an income of $19,500 qualifies for a 75% tuition scholarship.

·        Family of 6 with an income of $90,000 qualifies for a 25% tuition scholarship.


Yes, if the musician receives a 75% tuition scholarship and will volunteer 3 extra times during the season, then the scholarship will cover the entire cost of the tuition.  Flexible volunteer options are available.


Yes, but the musician must fill out the private lesson scholarship application on the website or print the application and mail it to the OAYO office.  Private lesson scholarships based on financial need and instrumentation.

HOW DO MUSICIANS APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS?  Musicians can go to the  Audition Page and fill out the Scholarship Applications for tuition and private lessons.  Fill out each application.  If printing the applications, please send to office.  Scholarship awards will be made before the season starts!

Application deadline:
On-line applications for both Scholarships are due no later than Thursday, March 1, 2018.  Paper Applications may be requested from the OAYO office, but also must be completed and returned to the OAYO office no later than Thursday, March 1, 2018.  No exceptions to the deadlines will be made.


The Deborah L. Gilmore Memorial Scholarship is a $500 award given to an outstanding OAYO graduating senior student.  The funds are to be applied to his or her tuition as music major in college.

The James W. Kirkpatrick Outstanding Achievement Award is a $500 award given to an OAYO graduating senior student.    The funds are to be applied to his or her tuition at college and are not restricted to any specific field of study.


Interviews will be conducted by a Scholarship Committee after applications are completed. Date to be determined.

Step 5: Wait for your cards to be shipped to your door.  We will place the orders for the cards once we get your order form. The cards will be shipped to us and we will mail them to you! You should receive your cards by December 15th.

Throughout the 2017-2018 concert season, musicians may be highlighted in efforts to promote the Omaha Area Youth Orchestras (OAYO) activities and achievements. For example, musicians may be featured in grant applications and/or to increase a public awareness of OAYO through newspapers, radio, TV, social media platforms, CDs, videos, displays, brochures and other types of media.
