The Omaha Area Youth Orchestras Concerto Competition is an opportunity to perform before a panel of judges, receive written comments and compete for one opportunity to perform as a soloist with Youth Symphony during the 2018-2019 season.
The OAYO Concerto Competition is limited to musicians who are members of the Omaha Area Youth Orchestras in BOTH the season in which they audition and the season in which they perform.
Members may audition on any instrument and are not limited to the instrument which they play in OAYO orchestras or ensembles. Winners may audition again after three years. There is no minimum age requirement.
The Competition is designed for all instrument divisions, ie. woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings, harp, guitar and piano. A single Competition winner will be announced.
The Concerto Competition Finals are open to the public at UNO Recital Hall (Children under age 10 not admitted.) The public will be allowed to listen to the competition only from the last rows in the back of the recital hall and no other location in the Strauss Performing Arts building.
Repertoire – One movement of a standard concerto or concert piece performed from memory.
Entrants should consider playability of the Concerto by a youth orchestra.
Pieces exceeding 10 minutes will be disqualified unless approval has been given by the Music Director prior to the Competition.
Entrants will be given up to 10 minutes to perform at the discretion of the judges.
All submitted selections will be reviewed by the Concerto Committee who reserves the right to reject any titles and/or limit the number of contestants.
OAYO will pay up to $200.00 in rental costs for orchestral parts and score for the performance with the Youth Symphony. Entrant will pay the remaining amounts.
The winner of the Concerto Competition will perform with the Youth Symphony during the 2018- 2019 season. The winner must be available to rehearse at the Music Director’s discretion during the 2018-2019 season.
